The Date palms scientific name is Phoenix dactylifera, is a tall, beautiful and majestic tree that is known for its edible sweet fruits, the dates. The Date palm produces true real dates. Date Palms are a very historically important type of palm tree because they are a source of food that has supplied nutrition to millions of people over thousands of years They may be eaten fresh or dried. The fruits can be stored for several years. In the early spring Date palms start to flower. At the end of spring as the dates develops, female flower stalks grow to a length of 6 feet. Female date palms start to produce dates after 6-8 years.The date palms produce a dozen of large yellow to brown pods that encase the flower clusters. The pods pop naturally when mature and reveal the flowers inside. Female flowers are cream and yellow, and male flowers are white. One pod can encase from 5000 to 10000 flowers. The dates are also may be used as secondary products to make wine, syrup, vinegar, cakes and ice-cream. They can grow to a height of 80-100 feet and can live for more than 200 years. They have a beautiful thick canopy of bluish-green pinnate leaves
